OPT Reporting Requirements

While on Optional Practical Training (OPT), you must continue to update the Office of International Services (OIS) in order to maintain your F-1 visa status. OIS is responsible for reporting this information on your behalf through the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).

Why

If your SEVIS record is not updated you may be considered unemployed which could result in the termination of your employment authorization

Traveling Outside the US while on OPT?

If you plan to return, you can request a travel signature if you plan to visit our office in person or a new I-20 if you need one mailed to you. Remember that travel signatures should be updated every 6 months for travel on OPT, and that you should carry these important documents with you.

If you will depart the US and discontinue your OPT, let us know by filling out a departure form.

Additional Reporting Requirements while on STEM OPT

In addition to the above reporting requirements, students on the 24-month STEM OPT Extension are required to confirm their employment every 6 months and submit periodic evaluations. Refer to the dates listed on your STEM EAD. All evaluations can be found on page 5 of the Form I-983.
