O-1 Individuals with Extraordinary Ability or Achievement
O-1 status provides work authorization for individuals with extraordinary ability who are employed by Oregon State University in their area of expertise.
In order to be eligible for OSU immigration sponsorship in O-1 status, both the OSU position and the individual must meet the requirements for O-1 status.
Who is Eligible?
What Positions are Eligible?
Length of Status
The prospective employee must:
- Possess extraordinary ability in the field as defined by the Immigration Service
- Have an assessment by a US peer organization confirming the employee’s qualifications and level of expertise
To be eligible for OSU immigration sponsorship in O-1 status, the OSU position must be in the employee’s field of expertise.
O-1 status has no mandated maximum length. The original approval of O-1 status can be authorized for up to 3 years. After that, any extension application can be approved for a maximum of up to 1 year at a time.
Other Considerations
O-1 employment authorization is specific to the position for which the work authorization is granted. OSU cannot change an O-1 employee’s position without updating the O-1 immigration work authorization first.
Family members of O-1 employees can come to the US in O-3 status.
