J-1 Exchange Visitors in the Research Scholar, Short-Term Scholar, Specialist, or Student Intern category must have sufficient finances to support themselves and any J-2 dependents for their entire stay in the United States. Funding must cover the costs of the program, fees, housing and living expenses, and mandatory health insurance coverage.

Funding Required for Immigration Document Issuance (J visa DS-2019)

The actual costs of your program, and for living in Oregon, may be higher than what is required for document issuance purposes. The minimum amount of funding that is considered sufficient for support at Oregon State University for each month of the scholar's program is:

$1,750 / month            scholar

+$1,300 / month            first dependent

+ $500 / month            each additional dependent

Documentation of funding may be:

  1. a statement from a bank showing available funds in the scholar's name (an additional affidavit form is needed if the statement is not in the scholar's name)
  2. a contract or an award letter from a sponsoring institution/government indicating the amount and dates that the scholar’s expenses will be covered.  The document(s) must be recently produced, and in English or accompanied by an English translation.
  3. a continued salary letter from the scholar's employer indicating the amount of salary and that it will be continued during the dates of the program or while abroad. The document(s) must be recently produced, and in English or accompanied by an English translation.

Copies or faxes of the documents are acceptable for the OSU application (original documents may be needed for visa processing by the US Consulate).

Scholars funded by OSU funding do not need to provide documentation to the Office of International Services, but will need to provide the original OSU funding documentation at their visa interview at the US Consulate abroad.
